In the run-up to Christmas, I’m sure that the last thing most of you want to think about are the Mocks (or exams in general)! Getting ahead of the game is probably the best thing you could do in terms of covering the content you need to know, and reducing unhealthy levels of stress which you may experience in the run-up to the Mocks.

Today’s blog post is going to be short and sweet. The Single Text for the Leaving Certificate 2015 (Shakespearean) is The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice. The question on Othello appears in Paper 2 Q 1 and is worth 60 marks.

As you know by now, the prescribed texts and poetry sections are vast in terms of the amount of information and details you need to remember, so I will attempt to break it down into bite-sized chunks.

As many of us are visual learners, here is a map of the characters and their relationships in Othello:

Found on: mssproductionteam.wikispaces.com and reproduced on Pinterest.

At this stage, you should have a comprehensive knowledge of the characters, their relationships etc., but if not now is the time to familiarize yourself with the map above (don’t worry, it’s not too late to start).

The main characters you should focus on for the purpose of the exam are:

  • Othello, the Moor
  • Iago, a villain
  • Desdemona, wife to Othello
  • Emilia, wife to Iago
  • Cassio, an honourable lieutenant
  • Bianca, a courtesan (and Cassio’s mistress)

It is important to note here that the short descriptions above are those which are provided in the introduction to the play. What unfolds in the play, is that these characters are much more complex and intricately designed than their stage descriptions suggest.

When revising, it is a good idea to read the scenes where these characters make their entrance and note their first impression on you, as the reader. Afterwards, make a note of your final thoughts on those characters and compare and contrast your first and last impressions. It is imperative when you are discussing a play such as this that you consider your own opinions and thoughts as they could make your paper stand out!

So, there is is – short and sweet, just like I promised. It is almost the holidays after all 🙂

As always, I sincerely appreciate any shares, comments or feedback. Thank you so very much for reading.
