As a new school nurse working in community health, I serve a diverse population. My current focus is on the student population preschool through 4th grade. It then expands further into families which may include birth through old age, as many families are again becoming multi-generational. “Community based nursing is defined as minor acute and chronic care that is comprehensive, coordinates, and delivered where people work, live or attend school” (Harkness & DeMarco, 2012, p. 8). My scope of care also entails health education, promotion, and prevention. I am an advocate for both students and families.
As a community health nurse working in a public setting, I must possess strong assessment, clinical, and diagnostic skills. Just as crucial are my skills to handle crisis, communicate clearly, and make sound decisions. In order to achieve this level of service the ability to think critically must be attained. My BSN courses at Ferris State University have allowed me to further develop my basic level critical thinking skills. Each assignment engaged the critical thinking process. We were held accountable to think about the topic, and then dig deeper to explore all the possibilities.
The examples being presented under “Generalist Nursing Practice” include two group presentations, and two individual assignments. The Nursing 310 example is a group project examining the issue of pre-diabetes in Kent County, in the format of a power point presentation. My individual contributions were to research the statistics, and develop interventions that could feasibly be implemented in the Grand Rapids School System. I also prepared my own slides and audio (slides 9-15 and 26) for the final presentation.
My individual example is a paper entitled “Time for Change: Nits OK to Stay!” This assignment required me to write a policy change pertinent to my place of employment. Lice pose a perceived threat to the school environment. It contributes to a number of lost days for students. Through research to support my policy, I rewrote the current Harper Creek lice policy. I plan on presenting it to the superintendent and the school board prior to the end of the 2011-12 school year.
The final example is also a group project. The goal of this project was to develop a new service to serve the community. Our group felt an outpatient congestive heart clinic would add value to a community while reducing the cost of treating this chronic disease. We started from square one and had to determine a location, develop a mission, vision and philosophy statement, marketing plan, budget, organizational chart, and job descriptions. This power point was the final step to sell it to potential employees and funders. My personal contribution was the preparation of the mission, vision and philosophy statements, the marketing plan, an advertisement for a nurse practitioner and the clinic. I also produced the power point and provided the audio portion.

  2. Generalist Nursing Practice Interdisciplinary health care is needed to reach the goal of a quality and safe care. I have worked with many different socioeconomic and cultural groups through out my nursing career. There can be many challenges to working with different groups. When completing my first part of my journey may ADN I was exposed to.
